MFA Program Timeline

The MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is a rigorous three-year residency program. Students should progress according to the approximate timeline below. These tasks are in addition to each student’s academic coursework, which is further described on our Degree Requirements webpage. Students can find all administrative forms on the Graduate School website.

1st Year

2nd Year

  • Continue reading from comprehensive exam reading list
  • Choose thesis advisor early in first semester
  • With your thesis advisor, choose additional five books for your comprehensive exam list
  • Submit your Appointment of Graduate Advisory Committee form before comprehensive exams
  • Complete your comprehensive exams (for MA students), which are typically held in the fourth full week of your fourth semester
  • Submit Report of Advisory Committee to the Graduate School by May 15
  • Complete draft of thesis

3rd Year

  • Submit your Advancement to Candidacy form by at least one semester before you plan to graduate
  • Schedule your thesis defense date (early spring semester)
  • Complete your comprehensive exams (for MFA/MA students)
  • Request a thesis formatting session with the Graduate School before your defense
  • Submit a copy of your thesis to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts by March 30
  • Submit your properly formatted thesis to the Graduate School by April 7
