The MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is a rigorous three-year residency program. Students should progress according to the approximate timeline below. These tasks are in addition to each student’s academic coursework, which is further described on our Degree Requirements webpage.

1st Year

  • Start developing thesis project
  • Get to know faculty
  • Begin reading from comprehensive exam reading list
  • Submit your Graduate Study Plan by the end of your second semester

2nd Year

  • Continue reading from comprehensive exam reading list
  • Choose thesis advisor early in first semester
  • With your thesis advisor, choose additional five books for your comprehensive exam list
  • Submit your Appointment of Graduate Advisory Committee form before comprehensive exams
  • Complete your comprehensive exams, which are typically held in the fourth full week of your fourth semester
  • Complete draft of thesis

3rd Year

  • Submit your Advancement to Candidacy form by October 15 for spring graduation
  • Schedule your thesis defense date (early spring semester)
  • Complete your comprehensive exams (for MFA/MA students)
  • Submit a copy of your thesis to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts by March 24
  • Submit your properly formatted thesis to the Graduate School by April 7
